Apples can be grown both from seed and through grafting. Grafting is a faster method for producing apple trees. It is important to plant apple trees in well-drained soil, and the graft union, which is the point where the scion (the upper part of the grafted tree) is attached to the rootstock, should be at least 2 inches above the soil line to prevent roots from growing out of the scion. The graft union can be identified by a swelling at the junction.
